January 16- January 23, 2010
We
depart from Honolulu Saturday, January 16 on the cruise ship,
Pride
of America.
Please plan your flights to Hawaii so you can board the ship by 3:00pm.
Board the ship at pier #2 near Aloha Tower in Honolulu.
If
you are coming early to Oahu and feel like a run Saturday morning, join
some of
us at the free Niketown fun run. In 2009 the run started at 9 AM and
was for distances
of 3, 5 and 7 miles. All levels of running ability were participating.
They have held the
run for some 10 years, so it is a pretty good bet it will still be going
next January. .

SHIPBOARD GREETING
After
you board the cruise ship, Pride
of America, in Honolulu and settle into your
cabin, you are invited to spend the afternoon hours enjoying food and
music by the pool.
Immediately following the ship's general life boat drill (approx. 6:00pm),
your event
directors will host an orientation and get acquainted meeting for runners
and guests in a
designated meeting room onboard. After that you will be on your own
for the evening
to dine as you wish and enjoy the evening lounges and stage shows. Our
ship departs
Honolulu pier at 8:00pm and we recommend you go topside to view the
warm,
sparkling Honolulu night skyline as we sail away

MAUI
"OFF DAY"
Arriving
dockside in Maui at 8:00am, nothing is officially scheduled on our first
day. It is a day to explore Maui where you may rent a car and spend
the day out on
your own. The ship stays overnight in this port so stay out as late
as you want tonight.
No matter what time you come home, your bed will be waiting for you.
We
will provide maps for anyone who wants to run or hike that day. You
can run from the
ship on a combination of street and bike trail. There is great hiking
in Haleakala Crater,
but it is rugged and the weather is unpredictable, with rain, snow,
wind and cold
all possible. If you plan to do this, come prepared..

MAUI
Hosted Morning Run
SOUTH WEST MAUI RUN
Since
we stayed overnight, we are still docked in Maui, which allows us to
run
early in the morning. We will go to Southwest Maui and start our run
from a large
beach. The run itself will be on the rolling surface of streets and
sidewalks through
a lush Maui neighborhood. This will be an easy run, since the next day
you can
challenge yourself as much as you want at Volcano Park. We wish to express
our
appreciation to Cheryl Bouillon and Sam Wilbur of the Valley Isle Road
Runners
for helping us find places to run on Maui. After the run you can stay
at the beach
for a while to swim and sun, or we will transport you back to the ship
so you can
explore Maui on your own. .
The
rest of the day is open to pursue other activities or just relax by
the pool.
Please be back on the ship at 5:00pm, we sail for Kona at 6:00pm

Hosted
Morning Run
VOLCANO RUN
Today,
as you awake, our ship will be docking in Hilo, Hawaii. Enjoy an early
ship's
buffet breakfast at your leisure. Since runners will not be back to
ship for lunch,
we suggest you gather fruits and other staples from the buffet to snack
on throughout
the day. Casual lunch facilities are available at Volcanos National
Park but not
included in the event. We will provide secure storage for knapsacks
at the event.
Plan to be off the ship and ready to go at 8:45 am.
At 9:00am, our transportation will depart Hilo pier for a beautiful
45 minute ride up
Kilauea Volcano and into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The run is
an out and back over
a very nice narrow paved National Park service road. Our event will
follow the Park's Mauna
Loa Strip Road beginning at 4,000 foot elevation and slowly climbing
over 10 miles to
6500 feet. The course is a gentle rise through high growth protected
Koa wood forests
with occasional views across the entire volcano. The higher you go,
the better the views.
Running in the Park is special and we wish to thank all of the Park
officials who helped
us to obtain the necessary permit. We ask all our members to show respect
for all park
rules and to show courtesy to Park Officials and the general public
while in the Park.
We wish to
thank Howard Shapiro of Hawaii for
his help in planning this course and
his lovely wife Marsha, for her volunteering to help us. Howard
was race director of the
Big Island Kilauea Volcano marathon, 10 mile and 5 mile runs for 8 years
and is our director
for this event. Howard will give a brief orientation before we start
out. There will be
water and energy bars at the start and at about 3 miles and 5 miles.
The weather at the
Park is changeable and may be quite chilly, or warm - or rainy - all
in the same day.
We suggest bringing suitable running clothes for any of these possibilities.
All may run, jog or walk as far as they wish and return at their own
pace.
When
runners are finished , we will shuttle you back to the Volcano Park's
Visitor
Center. You will also want to visit the nearby Old Volcano House Resort
on the rim of
steaming Kilauea Volcano where you will experience the full wonders
of this incredible
work of nature. Here, on the edge of the volcano, you view across the
entire active crater.
This is the Park's central visitor area where you may purchase lunch,
look at exhibits,
explore nearby trails, etc..
If
family and guests want to join us but don't wish to participate in running
or walking
the course, they are welcome. There is a 1 mile nature trail adjacent
to our event course.
In
the afternoon, if time permits, we plan to drive the Crater Rim Road
around the
volcano for scenic viewing and stops for photo opportunities. Last year
we had time after
leaving the Volcano House to visit the Jaggar Museum and Thurston Lava
Tube to view more
of the Park’s wonders. Also, after dark tonight our ship plans to sail
near the base of the
volcano very close to the lava flow where glowing red lava flows into
the sea, this is an
awesome sight !
We
will leave the Park at 4:00pm - Our ship sails at 6:00pm

KONA
"OFF DAY"
Run Part of The Famed "Ironman" Triathlon
Marathon Course
Nothing
is officially scheduled on our Off day. It is a day for rest and enjoyment
of the
Kona area. This is the only port of call where we are not at dockside.
Today we arrive Kona
about 7:30am and anchor off shore for the day. Ship's tenders will shuttle
guests into Kona
throughout the day. Kona is easy to walk around and enjoy, but time
constraints will make car
rental a challenge. Be back to dock by 5 PM to catch the last tender
back out to ship - we sail
for Kauai at 6:00pm.
The ships tender will drop you at the Kona pier, which is the start
of all three legs of the
famous Hawaii Ironman Triathlon. If you feel like a run, you can do
so on Ali’I Drive, a part
of the marathon run. We expect you will meet some locals out for their
morning run. There are
a couple of small beaches along the route 2 to 3 miles from the pier,
or you can swim at the
beach next to the pier. We will arrange to have someone watch your gear
while you go for
your run. For those of you who may want to bike, there is a bike rental
shop just down the
street with mountain and hybrid bikes available.

KAUAI
"OFF
DAY"
Nothing
is officially scheduled for today. It is a day for exploration and enjoyment
of Kauai. Our ship arrives in Nawiliwili Harbor at 8:00am and then stays
overnight.
This is a great day to really get out and do it since there is no concern
about when you
return to the ship. We will provide maps for anyone who wants to run
or hike that day.
There is a 5-mile jogging route around the Marriott Resort, which can
be reached by a
short walk from the ship. We will also have information on a hike possibility
not too
many miles from the ship.

Hosted
Poipu Beach Run & Ocean Dip
In
2008 and 2009, our group ran at Poipu Beach along streets with an ocean
view, where
a lot of locals also run. This is a very scenic area, and was enjoyed
by all. Pam Kruse, our
run director will provide aid stations manned by local volunteers. She
also generally has
several volunteers to run with our group, which adds to the enjoyment.
Pam has a fitness studio in Kalaheo, Kauai (www.fitbodkauai.com),
is a past race director
and is a runner and triathlete. Since the ship is in port overnight,
and only stays until 2pm,
we will need to get out early. We will leave the ship at 7.00am and
must board
our vehicles for return to the ship by 12:00 noon.
Mahalo
& Thank You Reception
We invite everyone to once again join us for a casual gathering at 4
PM for a hosted
cocktail party to say good-bye to new friends and explore ways to create
a better event
for the next year. We welcome all comments so that we can continue to
improve our event.
The rest of the evening is for you to enjoy one more night of shipboard
entertainment
as we sail for Honolulu
